A great set of winter sneakers should mirror the mail-carrier motto — they deliver in the rain, snow, sleet, or shine. Sneaker innovation has progressed so far that, odds are, there’s already a winter-ready version of your favorite shoe. With a world of technical materials at their feet, major brands have adopted these elements to reimagine everything from timeless silhouettes to popular running shoes.

Frigid forecasts can severely damage most pairs of walking shoes, leaving them stained, soggy, and unwearable. While we love a good pair of beaters, there’s nothing fun about leaving them out to dry all night, only to wake up the next morning and realize you can barely even step in them to grab breakfast.

And, like your shoes, your feet are valuable, too. Weatherproof sneakers provide the security to spare you from blisters and moisture build-up, so they’ll even help you avoid any sudden doctor’s appointments. Before going all in on a pair based on looks alone, take a deeper look at comfortable shoes for men or women featuring GORE-TEX membranes for breathable water protection, some insulation to keep your feet warm, and lugged soles so you can stay stable on slippery floors. Once a shoe has one of these, they’ll likely have them all, but consider what you’ll use them for.

Whether you need shoes geared toward rainy-day runs or something casual made of revamped materials, functionality doesn’t mean you’re sacrificing style. Some of the shoe game’s biggest names have shown their all-condition prowess, including On, Nike, and even Vans. Most recently, adidas dropped CORDURA-crafted Samba OG sneakers that sold out in seconds, so rest assured knowing that the world’s most popular shoes can still be fail-safe options in your closet once temperatures drop.

So follow our dedicated guide and see if your everyday pair has a weatherproof counterpart, or discover a new set of winter sneakers for your seasonal wardrobe.

A string of looting in Los Angeles plagued the city on Wednesday evening in the wake of the Dodgers’ World Series victory.

According to posts on social media from the Los Angeles Police Department, “several businesses” were looted, including what appeared to be a store that sells Nike product, according to a video retweeted by the police department. LAPD said that it was aware of the looting and said that it had made arrests.

“Several dispersal orders have been given,” LAPD posted on X. “Several businesses have been looted. It was requested to celebrate responsibly.”

The extent of the damage to the store was unclear. Nike confirmed that the impacted store was a Foot Locker Jumpman store. FN reached out to Foot Locker for a comment.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday evening, marking the team’s World Series title in the last five years.

A surge in retail crime, while particularly rampant in California, has plagued retail stores across the country. In January, Los Angeles police arrested a suspect in connection with a large theft of Nike products that were delivered to a location in Hawthorne, Calif. on Saturday. According to a police announcement, detectives and Nike’s global security director uncovered “thousands of pairs of stolen Nike shoes, clothing, accessories, and unique prototypes” amounting to about $5 million in value.

Jennifer Lawrence attended a World Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees held on Oct. 25 in Los Angeles.

Getting sporty, the “No Hard Feelings” star laced up a pair of Puma Speedcat OG in a contrasting black and white hue. Retailing for $100, the low-top silhouette included mixed suede and leather uppers accompanied by almond-shaped toes and black lace-up closures. Non-slip rubber soles, metallic gold logo detailing and white Puma cat embroidery on the toes finished off the set, making the sneakers instantly recognizable.

Jennifer Lawrence is seen arriving at the World Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees on Oct. 25, 2024, in Los Angeles.

The sneaker is a popular one for Puma. Currently, the shoe is sold out on the brand’s website but can be purchased via a slew of websites including Poizon, Kicks Crew and Goat, among others. Beyond the black and white colorway, Puma’s Speedcat comes in an array of unique colorways, giving prospective buyers a number of options to choose from. The style is so popular in fact that it was named the “hottest sneaker” in the world by Lyst last week.

Matching the casual vibes of her footwear choice, the “Red Sparrow” actress donned a black and white striped collared long-sleeve layered overtop a plain white tee. On the bottom, Lawrence wore black baggy trousers, a closet staple.

The look perfectly mirrored the color scheme of the actress’ footwear. As for accessories, the thespian shielded her features with thick black rectangular sunnies worn in tandem with simple stud earrings and a black leather bag with silver hardware.

Lawrence often makes sharp shoe statements, preferring styles that are classic and versatile. When on the red carpet, the “Hunger Games” star frequently wears pumps, sandals and wedged heels from brands including Gianvito Rossi, Gia Borghini and The Attico.

Her off-duty style also includes strappy sandals and mules from The Row, Bottega Venets and Simon Miller. When casually dressing, however, Lawrence regularly wears Ugg boots and go-to slides from Oofos, Manolo Blahnik and Pierre Hardy, as well as sneakers by Reebok, Nike and Dior.

Skate shoes may be trending, but there’s one brand that has that ethos embedded in its DNA: Vans. Whether it’s low-top styles for casual wear or souped-up options strictly for the skate park, the best Vans shoes have an impressive history of craftsmanship to back their notable design. From the best walking shoes for men to comfortable sneakers for women, the brand has catered to everyone and every style for decades.

Originally made with skateboarders and athletes in mind, Vans has produced innovative designs over the past five decades. The debut shoes were known for offering ankle support for boarding tricks and durability to keep up with wipeouts. Today, Vans has extended its product line to include options for other sports, too, like surfing and BMX, and now there are more lifestyle options made for daily wear, even if you’re not into the sports scene.

While any Vans shoe style is timeless, there are a few that remain best-sellers time and time again — and have even earned high honors as Footwear News’ Greatest Shoes of All Time. First up, the Vans Old Skool shoe, a classic design from the brand that was first seen in the 1970s. There’s also the Classic Slip-On Shoe, which caught the attention of surfers due to its easy pull-on-and-off silhouette. Like the Old Skool shoe, the Classic slip-on shoes are crafted with Vans’ traditional canvas material, a flexible fabric that’s both breathable and sturdy. And of course, the Vans Authentic shoe that launched with the brand back in 1966 and remains an affordable everyday favorite — even among fashion icons like Harry Styles who recently sported them at London Fashion Week.

Harry Styles is seen wearing Vans Authentic Shoes while attending the SS Daley show during London Fashion Week on September 13, 2024 in London, England.

On the topic of canvas shoes, Vans is one of the best shoe brands to have in your wardrobe based on its proprietary canvas materials alone. Each pair is exceptionally durable, machine-washable, and lightweight, while a thick rubber sole provides stability and grip for quick movement and walking on slick surfaces. These days, Vans has adapted its strategy to use other synthetic materials like leather and suede, incorporating modern and stylish twists to beloved classics.

Vans has seen a surge in popularity, mainly due to the resurgence of the Y2K-inspired skateboard trends in streetwear fashion and on social media. On TikTok, searches for #Vans have amassed an astounding 6 billion views, while the term “My Vans Collection” has amassed over 23 million posts. In just the past year, style stars like Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lawrence, and Zoë Kravitz have all been seen sporting Vans in their off-duty style, while long-time fans like Justin Bieber continue to keep them in rotation.

Vans also stays relevant in the market with buzzy collaborations with the likes of Barbie, Gucci, JJJJound, and Gallery Dept. Plus, the brand continues to draw to its past to update icons. The summer 2024 “Always Out There” collection plucked bold and chunky silhouettes from its ’90s and early aughts archives, reintroducing the Hylane, Upland, and Mixxa shoes with modern design touches and added comfort features.

Vans shoes aren’t just popular with skaters; they’re also the shoe of choice for anyone who loves a simple, reliable pair of sneakers. If you’re looking for a durable and comfortable pair of shoes, rest assured our below picks will tick every box.

The History of Vans Shoes

Vans’ history began in 1966, when brothers Paul and James van Doren founded the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California. The mission of the company was to provide the community with high-quality footwear — sans the expensive cost. The brothers began to produce and sell the shoes through their first store, which was adjacent to the factory that crafted each pair. The first pair of Vans sold was called the #44 Deck shoe — now known as the “Authentic” — which had a low profile silhouette that initially caught the attention of skateboarders. The shoes were the first of their kind to feature an outsole twice as thick as what other brands were crafting, and that rubber sole delivered impressive grip for skaters and athletes alike.

The brand kept expanding its offerings through the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1976, a modern iteration of the #44 shoes was reimagined by athletes Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. The updated look included a padded ankle collar; you might recognize it as the “Era” model today. Vans kept expanding their shoes through the ’70s and, in 1977, added the Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, and Slip-On, which are popular with skateboarders, surfers, and BMX riders today.

1989 brought the Caballeros (inspired by skater Steve Caballero) shoes to life. Vans cut the collar off to provide more ankle movements so athletes could have more flexibility while skating. Over the next few years, the shoes evolved into the Half Cab, a mid-top option.

For decades, Vans held its own in the sneaker market and gained a new fan base with hip-hop artists like Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco. This attention also caused the fashion world to pay attention, which prompted designers such as Marc Jacobs and Junya Watanabe to put their spin on the brand’s models.

Today, Vans has expanded its offering of classics to include trainers, high- and low-top silhouettes, and even platform shoes. Apart from new-and-improved designs, Vans has also introduced other materials (besides the traditional canvas the brand is known for) to their shoes. Vans shoes now come in synthetic materials like rubber and leather, allowing you plentiful options to choose from when shopping.

How Do Vans Shoes Fit?

Vans shoes are often true to size. The brand’s flexible canvas, suede, or soft leather uppers bode well for narrow to wide feet types, along with staple round-toe boxes that don’t pinch toes during intense activity or standing all day. However, keep in mind that Vans shoes lean more narrow, as they are designed for skateboarding where snug fits and side wall structure are ideal. Refer to the Vans shoe size chart to select your correct sizing for men and women.

Vans shoes also come in wide sizing for those who need more room. Several styles, including the Vans Classic Slip-On Shoes and Vans Sk8-Hi Shoes, offer wide-size options. If your foot is particularly wide, consider choosing a half size up than your usual size for extra wiggle room.

Luckily, Vans shoes rarely require a lengthy break-in period. After a handful of wears, the uppers will loosen and your feet will feel right at home in your new pair. But, if you need a tip for how to break in Vans Slip-Ons or other styles faster, consider wearing thick socks to stretch out the material or test driving around your house before you commit to a full day of wear.

Billie Eilish paid honor to her mom on Tuesday night in New York City at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards. The magazine gave mothers of notable celebrities a cover and celebrated them this year.

Maggie Baird, the mother of Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, was one of the women featured. For the outting, Eilish went with her typical oversized silhouette including a pair of puffed up skater sneakers.

Recently, she wore a pair of super rare sneakers. In her “Birds of a Feather” music video she opted for the 2005 Nike Dunk Low Premium in a “Hot Red/BlackVarsity Red” colorway. The shoes feature plaid panels and are a coveted iteration.

5 Shoe Trends Spotted on the Paris Spring 2025 Runways https://footwearnews.com/fashion/trends/shoe-trends-paris-fashion-week-spring-2025-runway-shows-1203698269/ Fri, 04 Oct 2024 15:40:13 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203698269

As the fashion marathon reached its final stop in Paris, it offered a clearer picture of what’s going to trend in shoe land come next season.

For one, shows in the French capital consolidated the elevation of flip-flops with new iterations of thong sandals dominating the local catwalks, which also continued to fuel the ballet core craze with different takes on flats, legwarmers and even toeless socks. Other novelties included sneakers’ great comeback and the mushrooming of laced-up mannish shoes, which were favored by a pool of brands to offset their feminine fashions.

Here’s a cheat sheet to master the latest footwear trends.

Thong Sandals

After Milan, brands in Paris continued to revisit the quintessential summer must-have shoe, showing range in their interpretations. These ran the gamut from the plastic version in pastel tones of Chloé’s cool girls to the sporty hybrids paraded at Miu Miu and Casablanca. More arty touches flourished at McQueen and Paula Canovas Del Vas, while at Carven and Paloma Wool a minimal approach conveyed ‘90s vibes. Ditto for brands including Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Nehera, that kept things timeless with black versions of the style.

Sneakers’ Comeback

Sneakers fans, rejoice! After few seasons of more dressed-up footwear options such as flats, mary janes and kitten heels taking the spotlight, sneakers are back in the game. Once again, Miuccia Prada led the way with her Miu Miu show, displaying designs with extra-flat soles, which also appeared at McQueen and Gabriela Hearst. Yet there’s a sub-category that was predominant and hard to miss: boxing shoes, aka high-top sneakers with flats soles that got the luxe treatment at the likes of Loewe and Stella McCartney and were taken to the extreme at Dior and Ann Demeulemeester.

Balletcore

If boxing is not really your thing, indulge in the balletcore craze. Brands shed new light on the dainty and comfy aesthetics, which follows in the footsteps of the all-about-flats trend seen in New York and Milan this season. Many labels spiced flats up with crafty techniques, as seen at Acne Studio, or laced up options, like at Chloé and Dries Van Noten. A fetish vibe infiltrated in the leather version favored by Ludovic de Saint Sernin and in Louis Vuitton’s bold take on flats, while distressed effects marked Stefano Gallici’s interpretation of the ballet style at Ann Demeulemeester. Leg warmers further build on the trend, as seen at shows ranging from Miu Miu to Rokh.

Lace It Up

As a counterpoint, fashion houses also looked at the men’s shoe rack to revisit Oxford styles that could ground their ready-to-wear collections and enable them to play with the feminine and masculine duality. Highlights included Jonathan Anderson’s take on men’s dress shoes for Loewe, where the designer stretched the silhouette to exaggerated length for an almost cartoon-like effect. Styles at Vivienne Westwood had a similar vibe, only reworked in a pointy toe, which also marked Victoria Beckham’s interpretation of the design, often rendered in a plastic version, too.

Slouchy Boots

The boho wave kickstarted with Chemena Kamali’s successful debut collection at Chloé earlier this year still trickled in some shows and the footwear options they displayed. Yet new interpretations of the slouchy boots found their way on the catwalks, from the sleek one seen at Balmain and Rick Owens to the extra-glam disco-ball version spotted at Rabanne.

Nike Reports Mixed Results For Q1, Postpones Investor Day https://footwearnews.com/business/earnings/nike-reports-mixed-results-q1-investor-day-1203697362/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 20:35:52 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203697362

Nike offered mixed results in its first earnings call since announcing that its CEO John Donahoe would step down and be replaced by Elliott Hill.

In addition to announcing results for the first quarter, the athletic giant said it would postpone its widely anticipated Investor Day, which was scheduled for Nov. 19, 2024. A new date has not yet been released. The company also withdrew its guidance for fiscal year 2025.

Shares of Nike were down more than 6.5 percent in after hours trading on Tuesday.

For the first quarter, Nike reported that revenues were down 10 percent to $11.59 billion over the same quarter last year, short of the $11.65 billion expected by analysts surveyed by Yahoo Finance. Net income was down 28 percent to $1.1 billion and diluted earnings per share was 70 cents, which represented a 26 percent decline. This was ahead of the 52 cents expected by analysts.

Nike chief financial officer Matthew Friend said in a statement that Nike’s Q1 results “largely met” expectations and that there are already signs for future recovery.

“A comeback at this scale takes time, but we see early wins — from momentum in key sports to accelerating our pace of newness and innovation,” Friend said. “Our teams are energized as Elliott Hill returns to lead Nike’s next stage of growth.”

Despite a generally positive reaction to the CEO news, analysts have broadly taken a conservative view of the stock, pointing out that big picture challenges persist for Nike. Some suggested in the last few weeks that Nike could further cut its guidance for the 2025 fiscal year as it implements a longterm turnaround plan.

Given the CEO shift, Nike withdrew its guidance for the year and will provide quarterly guidance throughout 2025, Friend said in a call with analysts. This approach is mean to help Hill embed in the company and determine how to reposition the brand for 2026. In June, Nike cut its fiscal year 2025 guidance and said it expected revenues for the year to be down in the mid single digits, with revenues for the first half of the year down in the high single digits.

Though Nike declined to give specific guidance for the year, Friend said that the brand’s revenue expectations have “moderated” due to digital and retail sales trends. Q2 revenues are expected to be down between 8 and 10 percent.

By brand, Nike brand revenues were down 10 percent to $11.1 billion in Q1, driven by declines across all geographies. Converse brand sales declined 15 percent to $501 million. By channel, Nike direct revenues were down 13 percent to $4.7 billion. Wholesale was down 8 percent to $6.4 billion.

Why This Third Generation Shoe Maker Started His Own Miami-Based Sneaker Brand https://footwearnews.com/business/business-news/third-generation-shoe-maker-miami-sneaker-brand-1203694574/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 19:23:55 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203694574

It was only a matter of time before Jordan Barrocas started making his own shoes.

A third generation shoe maker — and first generation American — Barrocas spent his childhood and early adulthood in the industry. He always wanted to start his own shoe brand, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2022 when the stars aligned and the white space opportunity in the market became clear.

“I didn’t see anything in the market that filled that gap of versatile and comfortable at the right price,” Barrocas told FN in an interview. “So that’s what we wanted to achieve.”

Along with his two partners, Alex Stancioff and Eric Elliott, Barrocas spent the next 18 months creating what would eventually become If/Then, his new sneaker brand that soft launched in October of 2023 with one silhouette, the Callisto, in 10 colorways.

The slip-on sneaker, which sells for $99, is constructed with a knit upper, memory foam insole and flexible EVA outsole meant to maximize comfort. The brand gets it name from the well-known conditional statement structure used in deductive reasoning. According to Barrocas, the name speaks to the brand’s logical approach to shoemaking that blends comfort and versatility.

If/Then

“I found partners that are amazing and helped make the whole thing work,” Barrocas said. “We started working on the idea of putting together a shoe that fit the needs of guys like me: a little bit more entrepreneurial and less corporate.”

Getting Started

While If/Then is Barrocas’ first shoe brand, the Florida-based entrepreneur is no a stranger to shoemaking. As a kid, Barrocas spent a lot of time in his family’s shoe factory in Florida, which his grandfather opened after moving to Miami from Cuba in 1960.

“As a kid I was going into the factory with my dad on the weekends and hanging out in the sample room, walking the stitching lines,” Barrocas said. “My first job was loading trucks in the shoe factory. So I really grew up in a shoe family. I didn’t know it was going to pull me back in right after going to college.”

After graduating with his an MBA from the University of Miami in 2011, Barrocas worked at several shoe companies, including BBC International, and eventually started working with a factory in Asia managing private label shoe businesses for retailers in the U.S. Along the way, Barrocas cofounded a beef jerky business, Three Jerks Jerky, that was featured on Shark Tank in 2015, where he delved deeper into the creative side of building a brand. When he started working on If/Then, Barrocas utilized his background in the shoe industry as well as his existing factory connections to help with manufacturing.

Jordan Barrocas

While If/Then has only been live for a year, Barrocas said the brand is on pace to do between $2.5 and $3.5 million in annual sales by the end of next year. He also noted that 25 percent of sales currently come from existing customers, which he sees as a testament to the brand’s positive reception. If/Then is currently preparing for a seed stage funding round after previously closing a friends and family round in July 2024.

Looking ahead, If/Then is already working on a second sneaker style with a thicker sole that will launch on Kickstarter later this year. If/Then will also come out with variations of its original Callisto as well as with a sneaker for women and has plans to launch apparel and accessories in the future. In the next year, Barrocas will also consider potential wholesale partnerships and pop-up opportunities where additive.

“It’s just a really exciting time and super fulfilling to have created this from nothing and have it be working so well, so quickly,” Barrocas said.

In a way, the brand’s name is also a reflection of the very mindset that brought it to life in the first place.

“Outcomes are a reflection of action,” Barrocas said. “So if we want something to happen, then we need to do something about it.”

Shoe Lovers Can Find Cars Shaped Like High Heels and Sneakers at the Guinness World Record-Setting Sudha Cars Museum https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/culture/guinness-world-records-sudha-car-museum-shoe-cars-1203691645/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 18:17:34 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203691645

Imagine driving down the street and noticing a stiletto or sneaker-shaped car cruising by. If car designer Sudhakar Kanyaboyina were to take one of his shoe-inspired creations for a spin in your neighborhood, this might just become your reality.

Sudhakar, who runs Sudha Cars Museum in Hyderabad, India, recently set the 2025 Guinness World Record for the largest collection of wacky vehicles in a museum. Per Guinness, his collection currently stands at 57 cars, one of which is a colorful stiletto while another is a gray and red high top sneaker.

Sudhakar’s stiletto car is a vibrant creation with metallic colorblocking and a polkadot pattern. He followed the classic pump design to a T, with a pointed toe, enclosed back and narrow heel. While the driver, of course, sits within the sole of the shoe.

Kanyaboyina is living out his childhood dream of transforming quotidian objects into quirky cars. He told Guinness, “The journey towards this achievement has involved dedication, perseverance, and overcoming numerous challenges.”

In addition to footwear, Sudhakar’s cars take many shapes, from a tennis ball to a hamburger. He aspires to have 100 cars in his museum one day.

Speaking on his car collection receiving this acknowledgment from Guinness, he said, “When finally holding the certificate, there is a profound sense of validation and accomplishment.”

This is not the first time Sudhakar has set a world record — he previously made it into the reference book in 2005 for creating the world’s largest tricycle, which stands 41 feet 7 inches tall.

Sudhakar is joined in the 2025 Guinness Book of World Records by Eric Kilburn, Jr., who was named the teenager with the largest hands and feet. His difficult journey to find shoes that fit went viral, landing him custom shoes from Puma and Under Armour in addition to gifts from Shaquille O’Neal, who understands the struggle of having above-average sized feet.

Jordan Chiles Stays Nike Loyal at 2024 US Open in Shox R4 Shoes https://footwearnews.com/shoes/womens-footwear/jordan-chiles-2024-us-open-shox-r4-sneakers-1203684241/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 21:23:41 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203684241 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Olympian Jordan Chiles hit up the 2024 US Open yesterday in Queens, New York. The athlete took in the 11th day of matches with a seemingly collegiate-inspired look and a pair of white Nike sneakers. Chile attended the event wearing an oversized burgundy cardigan featuring Nike patches.

The piece features a large swoop intertwined with N for Nike on the body in addition to a Niki logo on the arm. It evokes the vibe of a varsity letter cardigan that some colleges sell. Chiles paired it with a string of large pearls, diamond earrings, as well as sharp black shades. For a bottom she wore a pleated miniskirt.

Jordan Chiles attends day eleven of the 2024 US Open Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center on September 5 in New York City.

For shoes, she stuck with Nike. In particular, she wore the brand’s Shox R4 sneaker. The style is white and features metallic detailing up the sides. The upper includes mesh making the style quite light as well as breathable. In addition, the Shox R4  includes spring-like pillars, and was the first style to do so when it was released in 2000. These have a functional aspect of helping to absorb impact.

Net-a-Porter is currently selling the Nike Shox R4 in white for $150.

The gymnast is often seen in Nike head to toe but can switch it up adding in Prada, Louis Vuitton, American Eagle and Aritzia into the mix. “My shoes are always my final products” of the look she told WWD in May. “I still typically wear Nike for that sort of thing.” Though many female celebrities have been wearing glamorous heels for the US Open, Chiles is certainly not the first athlete to wear sneakers this year.
Serena Williams notably wore a pair of Gucci sneakers with the brand’s signature GG Supreme print and neon highlights.
