Months after Jordan Chiles debuted a mysterious new sneaker while throwing out the first pitch for the New York Mets, Nike is peeling back the curtain on its new Air Max model for women.

The Air Max Muse is a lifestyle model with a massive heel equipped its namesake cushioning unit and a trendy metallic silver colorway to usher in its first release. Computational design was used in development of the sneaker, which places an emphasis on comfort in style while drawing on familiar elements of retro runners. Molded synthetic leather covers the majority of the upper with raised, flame-like detailing streaking toward the heel. Rounded cut-outs then reveal a mesh base, while a glossy panel surrounds the Air Max unit to highlight the tech. Nike says the juxtaposition of textures will be a focal point of forthcoming colorways to follow in 2025.

“This silhouette was designed to surprise women sneaker fans, capturing their attention and imagination with a new application of Air — something they’ve never seen before,” Women’s footwear designer Can Eldem said in a press release. “Our goal was to design an entirely new Air Max model focused on both expression and comfort, making the silhouette uniquely hers — sleek, beautiful and bold — while offering the kind of innovation and cushion that she expects from the Air Max franchise.”

Marya Chan, materials design director for Nike Sportswear, added: “We wanted to explore how the finishes of the Air Max Muse could enhance the silhouette while also providing her a range of options to suit her evolving style and mood, beginning with our silver metal colorway. It was also important for the materials to surprise her, both in how they look and feel, creating a new, modern expression that can be styled in multiple ways to enhance her everyday look.”

Air Max tech has been a point of emphasis for Nike in November, well away from the Air Max Day window that typically highlights new applications of the tech. Just last week, the Swoosh unveiled its 3D-printed Air Max 1000.

The Nike Vomero 18 max-cushioned running sneaker that was introduced this week also features a female-centric design.

The Nike Air Max Muse will launch in “Silver Metal” December 11 through select third-party retailers. An additional launch will then follow January 10. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Nike’s Trending Air Max SNDR Sneaker Has a New Color That’s Only Releasing in Europe https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-air-max-sndr-obscura-hq4190-001-1234732188/ Mon, 18 Nov 2024 20:46:55 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234732188

The 2024 return of Nike’s Air Max SNDR (Sunder) sneaker has been well received thus far, with in-line colorways regularly selling out and an upcoming collaboration with Kids of Immigrants drawing crowds at ComplexCon. In addition to those styles, the recently revived model is set to release soon in a special colorway that can only be found in a certain corner of the world.

The Nike Air Max SNDR “Obscura” looks to the Nordic countries of Northern Europe for inspiration, coloring the sneaker in shades which are said to reference the dark and blistering cold winters in the region. The “Phantom/Black/Light Orewood Brown/Light Iron Ore” sneakers don a cream-colored upper with a stark jet black midsole and outsole.

The materials of the shoe have been updated, opting for a durable textile upper in place of the Air Max SNDR’s usual stretch neoprene. Said textile upper also channels the Northern Lights with a reflective pattern inspired by solar particles. Somewhat surprisingly, the “Obscura” version of the sneaker does not go as far as to use Gore-Tex like some of the recently released Air Max SNDR styles.

A cult favorite model since its inception, the Air Max SNDR debuted at retail in 1999 and was originally known as the Air Sunder Max. The shoe features Max Air cushioning in the heel coupled with standard Nike Air in the forefoot, but it’s the model’s upper that truly stands out. The zipper-equipped sneakers feature a shroud which covers the shoelaces and reflective paneling across their mudguard. After being teased by Nike in Oct. 2023 during its SNKRS Showcase product preview, the Air Max SNDR made its long-awaited return in July.

Tracking down the Nike Air Max SNDR “Obscura” may prove tricky for those in the States. The sneaker comes exclusively in women’s sizing and will be released Nov. 22 from retailers including Sneakersnstuff and Naked. Sneakersnstuff is holding a raffle for the pair, while Naked will release the shoes on its website. Retail pricing varies: they’re 190 euros (which converts to around $201 as of publishing) at Sneakersnstuff and $227 from Naked.

Nike Takes Air Max 1 Into the Future With This 3D-Printed Sneaker https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-air-max-1000-3d-printed-sneaker-1234730649/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 15:56:23 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234730649

Nike has taken a big step forward in 3D printing in a riff on the original Air Max sneaker.

The Nike Air Max 1000 is a new 3D-printed silhouette that reimagines the Air Max 1 and was manufactured with Zellerfeld. Nike isn’t saying a tremendous amount about the sneaker in its press release, but the lifestyle sneaker appears to be a single piece printed around the Air Max unit in the heel — setting it apart in features from what we typically see in 3D-printed shoes.

“As an innovator, what’s most exciting to me about the Air Max 1000 are the new solutions we can achieve with next-level manufacturing,” John Hoke, Nike chief innovation officer, said in a press release. “It’s control, times precision, times expression — all of which are vital to sport and to design. When those variables of control, precision and expression are multiplied at once, the future of our product really does feel unlimited.”

Nike will show the Air Max 1000 the public this weekend at ComplexCon, and attendees will have a chance to win an exclusive pair of the sneakers. Further release information for the sneaker has yet to be divulged — but there’s a nontrivial chance the Air Max 1000 ends up being a part of Nike’s plans for its annual Air Max Day celebration in March.

“Nike Air has been at the heart of Nike innovation for decades,” Hoke added. “It’s been reinvented, reimagined and pushed to new heights, and yet, despite all the advancements we’ve made, we are constantly pushing ourselves to feel that emotion of awe again and again. More than a technology, Nike Air is a mindset. It’s about embracing the unknown with optimism, as we believe that Air will never reach its final form.”

Zellerfeld, founded in 2015, has become a go-to for 3D-printing in the footwear industry, having worked with Louis Vuitton, Heron Preston, Moncler and more. This year, the German Company launched a 3D-platform it’s calling the “YouTube of shoes,” in which users can upload their own designs for 3D printing.

Nike Has Big Plans for Its 2025 Air Max Day Sneaker https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-air-max-dn8-air-max-day-2025-release-1234726574/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 20:15:24 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234726574

Update: Nov. 13, 2024 at 3:15 p.m. ET:

Nike’s Air Max Day 2025 celebration is still months away, but that hasn’t stopped the brand’s plans from hitting the internet ahead of time. After a first look appeared on the feet of Corteiz’s Javel Berlin in October, more colorways of the Nike Air Max Dn8 have now surfaced.

Currently expected to arrive in early March to kick off the Air Max Day (or more appropriately, month) releases, the Air Max Dn is the brand’s latest attempt at making a new lifestyle Air Max sneaker take off.

It’s the next evolution of the Air Max Dn, which was introduced in March 2024. By using four tube-shaped Air units, the Air Max Dn was designed to shift air underneath the wearer’s foot, and it’s been doubled to eight units for the upcoming Air Max Dn8.

While the exact tech specs are still unannounced, much can be deduced from the new product photos. The shoe will use a mesh-based upper supported by synthetic caging with a large TPU clip at the heel. Its toe box is reinforced for durability while the outsole appears to utilize Nike’s recycled rubber material. Branding includes an Air Max Plus-inspired logo reminiscent of the ’24 Air Max Dn on the heel and insole with a new-look “Air Max” logo on the tongue.

Nike reportedly plans to issue numerous Air Max Dn8 colorways throughout ’25 including the “Light British Tan” and “University Red/Bright Crimson” styles pictured here. Much like the Air Max Dn, which debuted via a collaboration with Supreme, it’s likely that the brand will seek out a collaborator to create energy around the new design.

The Nike Air Max Dn8 is currently expected to debut on March 6 at a retail price of $190. Readers can expect several pairs to arrive throughout the month of March and beyond.

What We Originally Reported on Oct. 31, 2024

In March 2024, Nike celebrated its annual Air Max Day holiday with the introduction of the Air Max Dn, a new sneaker which took inspiration from past models and added modern flair. For 2025, it looks like the brand will be issuing a sequel of sorts with even more Dynamic Air cushioning.

A first look at the shoe, believed to be called the Air Max Dn8, was spotted on the Instagram story of Javel Berlin, lead of marketing at UK streetwear brand Corteiz. Berlin’s shot shows that the shoe doubles the Dynamic Air cushioning of the original DN, adding four more units to the forefoot in addition to the existing four in the heel. The sneaker’s upper has also been tweaked with an even more technical design than its predecessor. The white-based colorway shared by Berlin featured green Dynamic Air units.

With the Air Max Dn, Nike introduced what it calls Dynamic Air, a cushioning setup made up of tube-shaped cushioning units which are designed to shift air between one another as pressure is applied.

The brand described the technology in a press release: “As you walk, the tubed-air unit will respond to the load your body puts on them with each step. The Air unit interacts with your foot in real time and moves with you. It’s an unreal new underfoot sensation, representing a significant evolution of Air Max’s signature bounce. You’ll have a smooth stride and a bounce to your step to keep you moving throughout your day.”

While the Air Max Dn was restrained with its foam forefoot, the Air Max Dn8 will dial it up with a nearly full Dynamic Air setup. Further specs on the model aren’t yet known, but if the Air Max Dn is any indication, fans can expect to see plenty of the Air Max Dn8 in ’25.

The new model is currently expected to launch on March 26 for Air Max Day 2025, but a release date has not been officially confirmed.

Charles Barkley’s 1990s Nike Sneakers Are Coming Back Next Year https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-air-cb-34-retro-charles-barkley-2025-release-date-1234729732/ Mon, 11 Nov 2024 18:31:23 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234729732

One of Charles Barkley’s most popular Nike signature sneakers will reportedly make a return in 2025.

Last seen on retailer shelves in 2016, Barkley’s third Nike signature shoe, the Air CB 34, is slated for a reissue nearly 10 years later. According to @sneakermarketro, the retro sneaker will reportedly return in its blank “Triple White” colorway during fall 2025, meaning it could arrive in stores as early as July. Devoid of color, the all-white iteration of the Air CB 34 was seen during the model’s last run of releases in ’16 alongside the original Phoenix Suns-themed “Godzilla” colorway

While not quite as aggressive in its design as some of Barkley’s other sneakers, the Air CB 34 is memorable for its Godzilla-inspired design. Taking a page from an early 1990s Weiden+Kennedy commercial pitting Barkley against the mythical monster, Nike leaned into the fictional theme by designing the midsole of the Air CB 34 to look like Godzilla’s feet. At the bottom, a unique traction pattern spelled out Barkley’s “Sir Charles” nickname complete with a crown graphic to represent royalty.

Like many of Barkley’s shoes, the Air CB 34 featured a supportive midfoot strap to contain Barkley’s explosive style of play – although it was considerably toned down from the straight jacket-inspired elastics seen on his previous shoe, the Air Max2 CB 94.

The Air CB 34 was originally released in 1995 as a follow-up to the aforementioned Air Max2 CB 94. Its first-ever retro came in 2007, followed by its most recent appearance in ’16.

With the pending arrival of the “Triple White” Nike Air CB 34 retro, it seems like a safe bet that the original “Godzilla” colorway will also be returning, although that has not yet been confirmed. For now, ‘90s basketball and sneaker fans and Barkley devotees can expect the model to return during the second half of ’25. The ’16 iteration of the “Triple White” colorway is pictured here.

After Months of Teasers, Kids of Immigrant’s Nike Air Max SNDR Collab Is Almost Here https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/kids-of-immigrants-nike-air-max-sndr-hf3286-500-hf3286-700-1234728272/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 20:40:14 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234728272

One of Nike’s top-trending sneakers of the year will soon receive a collaboration from an equally buzzy brand with the Kids of Immigrants x Nike Air Max SNDR.

Initially teased over the summer on one of Nike’s SNKRS streams, the Kids of Immigrants x Nike Air Max SNDR will feature two vibrant colorways of the late-‘90s design.

The model was first released in 1999 and then known as the Air Sunder Max, the Air Max SNDR has been one of Nike’s more surprising retro successes of 2024. Having already been released in a number of styles as well as winter-ready Gore-Tex-equipped versions, the shoe will now receive its second collaboration following the Comme des Garçon Homme Plus spin on the sneaker in 2022.

Set to launch in purple “Persian Violet” and orange “Sundial” colorways, the Kids of Immigrants x Nike Air Max SNDR is said to take inspiration from Nike’s ‘90s outdoor ACG range. Both pairs don colorful gradient treatments and the addition of TPU caging across both sides of the shoe, the first Air Max SNDRs to feature this design detail. They come with two-tone shoelaces — another nod to outdoor footwear — and feature translucent soles reading “kids of” on the left shoe and “immigrants” on the right.

As a nod to Kids of Immigrant co-founders Weleh Dennis and Daniel Buezo’s upbringings, the shoes come packaged with an international calling card accessory. A number listed on the card, 1 (323) 310-3062, leads callers to a Kids of Immigrants text message subscription.

Kids of Immigrants previously worked with Nike on a special set of Air Max 1 ’86 “Big Bubble” sneakers.

A release date for the Kids of Immigrants x Nike Air Max SNDR sneakers has not been confirmed, but both pairs are slated to arrive at retailers and Nike’s SNKRS app before the end of the year. Retail pricing of $190 is expected. Readers can find a detailed look at both styles below.

This Nike Air Max 180 Is Bringing a Serious Joker Look https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-air-max-180-joker-release-date-2024-fz3058-001-1234725158/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 19:10:07 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234725158 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

A retro Nike sneaker is about to take on the look of the most beloved Batman villain.

A new edition of the Nike Air Max 180 has immediately drawn comparisons to the Joker for its use of lime green and purple. Most of the suede and neoprene sneaker arrives in black, but its accenting colors invoke the Joker’s famous wardrobe. The outsole extends to the midsole’s arc over the heel Air Max unit in lime green to match the laces and Nike Air heel logo, while the heel stabilizer and tongue “180” mark arrive in purple. A portion of the outsole also arrives in translucent purple beneath the Air Max unit, and capping off the sneaker is a white suede Swoosh.

Sneakerheads regularly give a “Joker” nickname to sneakers making use of green and purple, but Stray Rats and New Balance invoked Batman’s nemesis in official fashion for a 2019 993v3 collaboration.

The Air Max 180 made its debut in 1991 and was the brain child of two legendary Nike designers, Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore. The idea was to make Air Max technology more visible then ever, and a blow moulding process allowed it to take up more territory through the heel. Urethane was also used for an outsole for the first time on the model, while neoprene helped provide a snug fit.

Just this year, Nike brought back the Air Max 180 with a one-to-one recreation of its original proportions for the first time in the “Ultramarine” colorway. The return of the “Concord” edition was also relished, as it was worn by Michael Jordan in a photoshoot for the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.”

The Nike Air Max 180 “Joker” doesn’t yet have a firm release date but is expected to release before the end of 2024 with a price of $150. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.

Nike’s 20th Doernbecher Freestyle Collection Is Packed With Special Details https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/nike-doernbecher-freestyle-20-collection-release-date-1234722681/ Sat, 19 Oct 2024 15:06:12 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234722681 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Every year since 2004, Nike has partnered with the Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for a special collection of sneakers designed by patients with proceeds benefiting care costs for families in need. To date, the partnership has raised $37 million for the hospital, and for the 20th installment, the figure will increase with a new set of six shoes and a special Air Jordan 20 sneaker auction celebrating every Doernbecher Freestyle contributor thus far.

This year’s collection includes an Air Jordan 6 Retro designed by Jillian Beagley, a 14-year-old patient who received a liver transplant at 11. Her design includes mismatched left and right shoes, numerous interchangeable Velcro patches and toe boxes which wear away to reveal a new color underneath. “Give life” embroidery is featured on the toe as a tribute to her liver donor.

9-year-old Sophia Jenkins, who has osteosarcoma, designed her own Nike Sabrina 2. The parasport athlete referenced things that bring her joy and comfort, like her fuzzy blanket which is replicated on the liner. Smiley faces and flower graphics represent some of her favorite stickers, and the shoe also comes packaged with DIY friendship bracelets.

Tima Sviridenko, an 11-year-old patient with X-linked lymphoproliferative Disease 1, designed the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 41 in honor of his cat, Murka. His pet is referenced throughout the shoe, including at the tip of the Swoosh logo as a reminder to “hang in there.” Even the outsole of the Zoom Pegasus 41 has been altered to include a paw print.

Connor Kassing Fernández’s positive attitude toward surgery and chemotherapy is highlighted on his Nike Air Max Dn design, which includes his “paso a pasa” (step by step) motto on the glow-in-the-dark outsole in both Spanish and English. The upper of the shoe is adorned in some of the 14-year-old patient’s favorite things including sunrises, quesadillas and music notes.

The Nike Air Max SNDR was the shoe of choice for Quin Nims, 10, who was diagnosed with an anorectal malformation. Nims covered the Air Max SNDR in blots of color she says represent “splashes of joy and power” to create what she calls the “happiest shoes that I can think of.” The shoe features an updated mudguard with a dragon-inspired spike look that’s even textured to look like the magical creatures.

Ja’Kai Taylor designed the Nike Air 180 with nods to his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. The lightning bolt-covered shoe features a fully glow-in-the-dark outsole and a gradient fade inspired by video games. The shoe’s Swoosh is given a bubbly look inspired by his love for juice boxes, while the lightning bolts reference the electronic glucose monitors he wears.

Each sneaker in the Nike “Doernbecher Freestyle 20” collection will come in new pop-up shoeboxes. An exact release date for the group has not been announced, but Nike says it will launch globally this winter on SNKRS and from select retailers. Patta Is Bringing Its Nike ‘Wave’ Collaborations to the Classic Air Max 90 https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/patta-nike-air-max-90-wave-release-date-1234720585/ Sun, 13 Oct 2024 17:13:06 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1234720585 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

After Amsterdam retailer Patta celebrated its 20th anniversary this year by bringing back the fan-favorite “Chlorophyll” Nike Air Max 1 collaboration, it looks like the boutique will keep its Swoosh momentum going by applying a familiar design to a new sneaker.

Talk of a Patta x Nike Air Max 90 “Wave” first surfaced in early October, and now Patta co-founder Edson Sabajo has shared a first look at the new design. The collaboration repurposes the concept from Patta’s Air Max 1 “The Wave,” which was released in a total of six different styles throughout 2021 and 2022. Sometimes nicknamed “Waves,” the shoes feature a bumpy wave-like pattern on their mudguard.

Like Patta’s work on the Air Max 1, the Air Max 90 revamps the traditionally linear mudguard for a wavy look. The pair shared by Sabajo features a white-and-silver style with accents reminiscent of the classic Air Max BW “Persian Violet” colorway. The Air Max 90’s mesh appears to match the same material Patta used on the “Wave” Air Max 1, and other panels look more premium than the model’s standard fair. Patta’s logo, designed by artist and fellow Nike collaborator Piet Parra, appears on the tongue.

Patta and Nike’s partnership began in the mid 2000s, long before sneaker collaborations were ordinary. Their first joint release was 2006’s “Homegrown” Air Max 90, making the upcoming “Wave” style a full circle moment for both parties. Collaborations have included Air Jordans and obscure Nikes, but the retailer is best known for its work on the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 silhouettes. Along with the retro of the “Chlorophyll” Air Max 1, 2024 saw Patta release the Air Huarache 20Y24 hybrid sneaker.

According to early reports, a number of Patta x Nike Air Max 90 “Wave” styles will be released similar to the output of the Air Max 1.

Update: Sept. 11, 2024 at 3:20 p.m. ET:

As reported by FN in July, Patta’s Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll” collaboration will return soon to help the Amsterdam retailer celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The collaboration’s rerelease was confirmed last week by Nike, which shared more details behind the revitalization of the Air Max 1 collaboration.

First launched in 2009 in honor of Patta’s 5th anniversary, the store’s “Chlorophyll” Nike Air Max 1 now makes a comeback for Patta’s 15th year in business. According to Nike, the duo focused on accurately replicating the look and feel of the original pair, right down to the same fabric found on the ’09 iteration. Changes are mostly subtle and include a new insole featuring the €20 bill and a special 20th anniversary shoebox.

“The original ‘Chlorophyll’ project was almost like a first album: there was a lot of energy, a lot of ideation in there, and the product was just very organic,” Patta co-founder Guillaume “Gee” Schmidt said in Nike’s press release. “With this release, we stick to the essence of the shoe, which really stands the test of time. It’s just an amazing moment to bring back a shoe that’s so coveted, that’s so loved by the sneaker community and the community at large.”

With over 10 collaborations between them and six Air Max 1s alone, Nike says Patta is not only its longest but its most impactful Air Max collaborator.

Once so scarce that ’09 pairs were surpassing sales of $2,000 on StockX, the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll” is finally returning to retail. The collaboration will launch exclusively from pattaxnike.com and Patta stores on Sept. 13. The Patta store in Lagos, Nigeria will offer early access on Sept. 12. Retail pricing is $160.

What We Originally Reported on July 14, 2024

Amsterdam, Netherlands-based sneaker and streetwear retailer Patta celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion, it looks like it will be revisiting one of its most popular Nike collaborations.

Originally reported by Nike Air Max-centric leaker account @bubblekope in November 2023, Patta is lined up to release a “Chlorophyll/Chlorophyll/Matte Silver” Nike Air Max 1 with style code HF1012-300 during fall 2024.

The colorway description is similar to Patta’s Nike Air Max 1 collaboration from 2009, which featured a “White/Chlorophyll/Matte Silver” colorway and has gone on to become one of the boutique’s most desirable collaborations. Due to the variation in the style code, some early speculation theorized that Patta could be releasing a new “2.0” version of the sneaker with small changes. Now, a potential first look at the ’24 iteration has surfaced courtesy of Patta itself.

Patta co-founders Edson Sabajo and Guillaume “Gee” Schmidt shared today a joint Instagram post alongside Nigerian singer Tems. On foot, both Sabajo and Schmidt were wearing a version of the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 “Chlorophyll,” although it’s not immediately clear if it was the ’24 iteration. However, in the same photo, Tems was holding a Nike shoebox emblazoned with chlorophyll green and 20th anniversary text — a possible giveaway at the box’s contents.

During its 20-year run, Patta has created numerous coveted footwear collaborations with brands including Converse, Nike and New Balance. Most recently, it worked with Nike on a “Running Team” collection highlighted by the Air Huarache 20Y24 hybrid sneaker.

The not-so-subtle teaser seems to all but confirm that Patta is indeed rereleasing its “Chlorophyll” Nike Air Max 1 in some form this year. As of now, the collaboration is expected to arrive sometime during fall ’24. Check back for further updates soon.
